After a lesson filled scrimmage last week versus Shoemaker, the Freshmen Red Tigers found themselves in Pflugerville matched up against the Hawks of Hendrickson High School for the first official game of the season.
The Tigers started the game with the ball and after a good return to midfield by Darnell Adams the offense went to work. La’Darris Brown hit the end zone first with a 36-yard touchdown run. Brody Lee capped it off with a short run for two points. After a good stop on defense the Tigers ended the quarter with an 8-0 advantage.
To start the second quarter, the Tigers weaved through the Hawk defense when Brody Lee scrambled right up the middle for a 37-yard TD run. Exhausted from the drive, Aiden Horton found Brett Smith for the easy two-point pitch and catch. Nelson Dawson squashed a would-be Hawk drive attempt and intercepted a ball returning it 50 yards for a touchdown only to be called back by a penalty. The Tigers couldn’t convert but held the advantage 16-0 going into the half.
After a grueling back and forth 10-minute third quarter, the Hawks found the end zone once and but the Tigers led 16-6. Some good tackles and heavy hitting allowed the Tigers to keep ahold of the lead that they had built. Julian Harding intercepted a screen pass to end a threatening Hawk drive at the end of the third period.
Things heated back up in the fourth quarter with lots of scoring. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Aiden Horton found a wide-open Brett Smith for a 29-yard touchdown pass and reception. Brody Lee found pay dirt for the 2-point conversion and extended the lead to 24-6. The Hawks didn’t quit and were able to score twice in the fourth quarter. After one of the touchdowns, Darnell Adams picked off a would be two-point conversion. The Tiger defense did a great job all night of not giving up the two point conversions after each touchdown holding the Hawks to 18 points. While trying to run out the clock the weary Tigers busted through the defense one last time. Brody Lee again bolted through the defense for a 31-yard touchdown run. Lee then scrambled around and found Jacob Cook in the back of the end zone for the final 2-point conversion. As the time dwindled down, the Tigers took to the field and performed the old familiar “Victory Offense” otherwise known as the “Take a Knee”. The young Tigers and were ecstatic as they lined up to shake the hands of the opponent. Final score 32-18.
The Tigers will be in action next week versus the Georgetown Eagles. Congratulations to Coach Dumont on his first ever win as a coach.
